The Globus DiaCare 5000 diathermy device has been completely redesigned by the manufacturer and now offers frequencies of 400, 700, and 1000 kHz in addition to the 470 kHz frequency. This allows the user to perform TECAR therapy much more effectively, depending on the type of tissue and the depth of the treatment area. 

The DiaCare 5000 is a diathermy device for high-frequency thermotherapy, particularly in the field of physiotherapy. It utilizes the body's own energy and its natural ability to regenerate body tissue and muscle. This is the fundamental principle based on the technology known as diathermy or TECAR therapy.

Diathermy is used in two different modes: capacitive and resistive. Both modes can be used with the DiaCare 5000. This allows the biological effect of diathermy to be more effectively tailored to the respective application, whether for tissue types with higher resistance (tissue with a lower water concentration) or low-resistance tissue.

The DiaCare 5000 operates at a maximum power of up to 200W.

It offers personalized applications in the field of rehabilitation, e.g. as a supportive therapy for shoulder problems, epicondylitis, back, hip, and ankle complaints, and muscle disorders. It also includes various sports programs that can be used, among other things, for trauma and to support recovery after intense training sessions/competitions.

A large backlit display shows all data. The DiaCare 5000 diathermy device also features a rubberized keypad and a color touchscreen. The delivery includes a practical and elegant aluminum case with CapTrode and DualTrode electrodes.

CAPTRODE: A mobile, monopolar handpiece with three heads in different sizes and a counter electrode for capacitive mode. Included in the delivery.

DUALTRODE: A mobile, monopolar handpiece with three heads in different sizes and a counter electrode for resistive mode. Included in the delivery.

COUNTER-ELECTRODE (Gegenelektrode)

MONOTRODE: All-in-one handpiece for easier use of resistive mode. The use of a counter electrode is not required with the Monotrode handpiece, as it is already integrated into the handpiece. It is a bipolar handpiece. NOT INCLUDED IN THE DELIVERY.

Automatic Frequency Scanning: Automatic frequency scanning makes it possible to optimize the effectiveness of heat applications in all tissue layers during treatment by automatically switching frequencies.

Athermal Applications: There are various pathologies for which heat application is counterproductive to the healing process. The DiaCare 5000 now also enables athermal applications for biostimulation, which generate no heat.

Transdermal Delivery of Active Ingredients: This special program supports the absorption of active ingredients in ointment form.

Freehand Program: With this program and the Globus Hands-Free Kit Accessories, it is possible to run the diathermy programs independently without the electrodes having to be guided by the therapist. The radio wave emission is programmed to prevent the electrodes from overheating. The freehand program is further divided into 3 preset programs. The parameters of each program are determined by the distance between the two electrodes (resistive or capacitive and the counter electrode).

The short setting should be selected when the electrodes are close together. Specifically, this is a distance of approximately 20-30cm between the counter plate (neutral electrode) and the resistive/capacitive electrode. This setting is used, for example, for shoulder treatment, with the electrodes placed in front of and behind the humeral head. The manufacturer recommends a medium setting for an electrode distance of 30-60cm, e.g. for treating the entire back. Here, the counter plate is placed under the abdomen, while the back is treated with the active electrode.

The long setting is used for all applications where the electrode distance is over 60cm. An example is the treatment of the lower extremity, when one electrode is placed under the buttocks and the sole of the foot, calves, and/or thighs are then treated.

For each of the 3 settings, there is also a different work cycle to ensure good heat perception without overheating the tissue. The work cycle interval is personalized for each program. The therapist should therefore choose the setting appropriate for the respective treatment.

The advantage of freehand applications is that the therapist can still manually treat the area being treated during the diathermy application or perform exercises with the patient.

FAQs on TECAR Therapy

How can you identify the handpiece for capacitive mode? The capacitive handpiece is equipped with a red cable/plug, while the resistive handpiece has a blue cable.

Must the resistive handpiece remain firmly on the treatment area during the diathermy treatment? The mobile electrode must be moved in circular motions over the skin with the handpiece to transfer heat evenly into the tissue being treated.

What is the optimal temperature that should be used for treatment? In principle, you should ensure that the temperature increase is gradual. We recommend using the temperature scale in the user manual. During treatment, the patient should be regularly asked about their temperature perception on a scale of 1 to 10. It is advisable not to exceed level 5-6 as a rule. If the patient indicates level 7/8, the intensity can be reduced.

Can TECAR therapy also be used for fractures? Yes, the temperature increase can help reduce pain and positively influence the bone regeneration process. Therefore, TECAR therapy can also be very effectively used for bone fractures.

Should the cream only be applied to the electrode head? There should always be a sufficient amount of special TECAR cream between the electrode and the skin so that electrical charges can be transferred evenly to the tissue. This also applies to the counter plate, on which a sufficient amount of cream should also be applied. It is important to use a sufficient amount so that the electrical charges are transferred not only under the small diameter of the mobile electrode to the skin, but over the entire treatment area.

Is it possible to use regular cream from the cosmetics range? We strongly advise against using regular skin cream or serums that are not specifically approved for diathermy applications. A cream that is not approved for TECAR applications can cause a sharp increase in impedance and prevent the correct energy transfer, which can lead to superficial burns. However, it is possible to mix the conductive diathermy cream with a portion of another cream, as long as both parts are then thoroughly mixed.
 

When is capacitive mode used in TECAR therapy, and when is resistive mode used? When using capacitive mode, electrical charges accumulate around the electrode, which is why capacitive mode is mainly used for all muscle disorders. In contrast, electrical charges accumulate near the joints, ligaments, and tendons in resistive mode. This mode is primarily used for conditions where a positive effect is expected in joint disorders such as osteoarthritis, scapulohumeral periarthritis, capsulitis, etc.

What are the recommended power levels? The patient's heat perception should never be too high. For both joint and tendon-muscle disorders, the heat should not exceed level 5/6 on the temperature scale. For treatment during the acute phase and for treating edema, we recommend using a low power setting.

Is a massage recommended after TECAR therapy? A classic massage at the end of the application is certainly recommended, but it is not required. The massage serves to relax the muscle tissue, which can help drain fluids better.

How do you choose the right electrode size? A small electrode size (30mm) is specifically designed for small areas and trigger point treatment. The medium electrodes (50mm) are for areas such as the shoulders, ankles, hands, and neck. The large electrodes (70mm) are designed for large areas such as the thighs, arms, legs, buttocks, and lumbar/dorsal muscles.

How long should different musculoskeletal groups be treated? For treating small areas (shoulder, knee, hip, ankle, foot), we recommend approximately 15 minutes; for larger areas, we recommend approximately 30 minutes.

Is it possible to treat edema? Absolutely! Diathermy is a form of therapy suitable for treating superficial and intra-articular edema. However, the energy level should be very low.

How many TECAR therapy sessions are recommended? This depends heavily on the respective condition/trauma. Normally, 5-7 sessions guarantee a good result.

Can TECAR therapy be used in the acute phase? Yes, but to avoid possible negative reactions, it is recommended to start treatment 24 hours after the acute event. We recommend that the therapist perform the first sessions with very low energy.

Can the thickness of the epidermis affect heat perception? Yes! If the patient's skin has reduced thickness, heat perception is significantly greater than with increased epidermis thickness.
