High-quality shock wave therapy device for physiotherapy.

The Shock Med from EME Physio, part of the new Italdesign line, is a shockwave device for rehabilitation clinics, orthopedic surgeons, physiotherapists, and professional athletes. With up to 5 bar of power and a frequency range of 1-20 Hz, it is perfectly suited for all applications.

The difference between the visually identical Shock Med SP shockwave device lies in its technical specifications. With 5 bar at 1-20 Hz, the Shock Med delivers sufficient reserves for even the most demanding users.

The Shock Med is intuitive to operate via its large, 10.1-inch color touchscreen. Program selection based on pathologies or body zones makes working with this shockwave device highly effective.

General information about shock wave therapy

Shockwave therapy devices were originally developed to break up kidney stones, thus avoiding surgery for affected patients. To achieve this, this form of therapy emits mechanical energy pulses that are safely delivered to a concentrated area of the body. This stimulates metabolism in the target area, which can promote the formation of new blood vessels.

In addition, the body's own natural healing process can be accelerated and thus the restoration of damaged tissue.

The newly formed blood vessels created by shockwave therapy can improve blood and oxygen supply to the treated area and facilitate faster rehabilitation of tendon and bone injuries. Shockwave therapy acts as a catalyst for the healing of tissue that would otherwise not have regenerated to this extent naturally.

This form of therapy is a non-invasive treatment that uses acoustic waves to treat various musculoskeletal disorders. To understand the technology behind it, Shock Med from EME Physio emits a radial (ballistic) shock wave. This shock wave is generated by a special, pistol-shaped probe with a metal cap at the end.

In the pistol, a steel bullet is fired against this cap using compressed air (max. pressure 5 bar). This creates a shock wave that spreads radially through the skin and can have a more or less focused effect on the underlying tissue layer.

Mechanism of action and biological effects of shock wave therapy

The shock waves generated by a shock wave device are characterized by a high overpressure, a short time span of less than 10 ns to maximum velocity and a voltage waveform.

The overpressure and the short time to maximum acceleration are responsible for the direct effect of the shock waves. The stress wave, on the other hand, is responsible for the indirect effect of the shock waves, or the cavitation effect.

The direct effect of shock wave therapy is based on the conversion of shock waves into kinetic energy at the interfaces between tissues of different impedance or density.

The different densities of bone, muscle, and fat alter the generated energy through the phenomena of reflection and transmission. Shock waves passing through tissue with high fluid content lead to the formation of microscopic gas bubbles (also known as the cavitation effect).

The resulting gas bubbles are then impacted by subsequent high-pressure shock waves, causing the gas bubbles to deform and collapse (implode).

This leads to the formation of the so-called jet stream, which is strongly accelerated by the low-pressure field within the microbubble gas immediately after the implosion.

To penetrate thin membranes made of plastic or aluminum, the jet stream reaches high speeds of approximately 100–800 m/s. The tissue can be used to detect microcracks, the size of which, in turn, depends on the number of pulses and their energy.

Shock Med - the smart shock wave therapy

EME Physio provides rehabilitation clinics, physiotherapy practices, and even the medical departments of professional sports clubs, such as Bundesliga soccer clubs and cycling teams like BORA hansgrohe, with the Shock Med, an innovative treatment system. The device's integrated software offers therapists 31 different programs, divided into anatomical areas. In addition, 200 individually customized programs can be saved.

EME shock wave therapy device - the strengths

Soft Rebound System : The rebound effect on the therapist's arms has been reduced by 95% thanks to the new applicator developed by EME Physio. It features an internal spring system to dampen the rebound effect.

One Touch System : The One Touch System on the Shock Med can be used in continuous and pulse mode. The shock waves are triggered automatically and continuously. The therapist simply presses the button on the probe once to start or pause treatment. At the end of the therapy, the shock waves are automatically stopped.

Individually adjusted operating modes : The parameters used during shockwave treatments can be adjusted in three operating modes.
1. Continuous operation : Intensity and frequency can be varied by the therapist.
2. Shock mode : The therapist can change the intensity, number and frequency of the shock waves during an activation, as well as the time between two activations.
3. Single operation : Only the shock intensity can be varied.

Shock wave therapy - the possible applications

Shock wave therapy is currently one of the most effective treatments for chronic insertional tendinopathies, which are characterized by poor vascularization of the osteotendinous junction. When physiotherapy (infiltrations and laser therapy) have proven ineffective, shock wave therapy is always an option.

The following is a summary of the main pathologies that can be treated with shock waves:
• Shoulder sectional tendinopathies, impingement syndrome.
• Elbow epicondylitis, epitrocleitis.
• Knee, patellar, and goose foot tendinopathies.
• Pubis adductor tendinopathies (pubalgia).
• Achilles tendinopathy, calcaneal apophysis.

The main areas of application of shock wave therapy: Orthopaedics / Physical rehabilitation / Sports medicine / Aesthetic medicine

Therapeutic effects of shock wave therapy

Shortening of recovery times : The use of shock wave devices can lead to an improvement in collagen production, a stimulation of metabolism and microcirculation (increases tissue oxygenation and reduces nociceptive metabolites).

Pain relief: Improved distribution of substance P (a neurotransmitter from the neurokinin family. Pain in the affected area can be relieved by reducing its concentration and reducing the risk of edema) and a reduction in muscle tone.

Restoration of mobility : Improvement of the resorption of calcium deposits and the dissolution of calcified fibroblasts.
