TENS devices - electrical impulses slow down the pain

As with EMS (electrical muscle stimulation), the TENS device delivers electrical impulses near the target area. The same adhesive electrodes attached to the skin are used here. However, TENS doesn't specifically stimulate muscles, but rather sensitive nerves to inhibit the transmission of pain to the brain.

To achieve this, the electrodes are placed as close as possible to the neuralgic point or in the area supplied by the corresponding nerve. TENS devices typically operate with biphasic rectangular pulses, i.e., alternating current, in low (2 to 10 hertz) or high (80 to 120 hertz) frequency ranges, depending on the type of pain and the treatment goal.

EMS, on the other hand, uses frequencies between 45 and 65 hertz for training and relaxation purposes. The frequency and intensity levels are adjustable: the impulse should never be painful, but at most a tingling sensation. Stimulation current therapy increases both the pain threshold and the release of certain endogenous neurotransmitters, endorphins, which directly block pain receptors.
